Anthrax argyropygus

Anthrax argyropygus
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
May 16, 2010
Size: 8 mm
Found hovering around blooming Ligustrum, and perhaps taking nectar. (It did land on my flash-head, and my hand.) Size estimated. I was struck by how small this fly was--smaller than other members of the genus I have seen. The wings are also very narrow, giving an even more dainty appearance.

Body in focus here--linked photo shows the wing pattern.

Wow!
Focus and clarity are impressive for "in flight" shots.

thanks
Thanks, Aaron. It was being fairly cooperative, perching and hovering intermittently in the same spots. I had to use manual focus (preset) and moved the camera in and out as it hovered. I shot four frames or so, and one came into very good focus. F-stop 11 for some depth-of-field, and flash (for freezing motion) helped quite a bit.
