Dytiscus larva? - Thermonectus Scott County, Virginia, USA May 8, 2010 Size: small (that's my hand)
This was in a vernal pool (aka, mud puddle) in the floodplain under trees. The puddle also had American Toad tadpoles in it. The larva was swimming through the water using its legs (which I thought at first were fins of a fish). It would stop and bob to the surface to breath.
