Tussock Moth -
Halysidota
Conway, Horry County, South Carolina, USA
May 19, 2010
Size: approx. 25mm length
nocturnal, found near light. suspect Sycamore Tussock Moth (Halysidota harrisii). have found H. harrisii cats in June and Sept. here, no other similar spp. cats.

I Was Thinking ...
a Banded Tussock, but since you have found cats, I'd lean toward a Sycamore.
Supposedly, the Sycamore Tussock has "yellow squares along the costa," but they still look identical to me. It might be worth noting that the
ONLY
Sycamore Tussock Moth
posted on Bug Guide is supported by DNA barcoding ... and I still don't see any yellow squares :)

Banded Tussock Moth maybe ?
Wow, Halysidota tessellaris and your Halysidota harrisii suggestion look near identical to me. Wonder how you separate the two?
