Size: ~ 4 mm
at fresh cattle dung. browsed diptera but didn't find this group though I am sure it is there somewhere.

Appreciation
I am a big fan of dipterists ... I read Olroyd when I was in 8th grade. Now I can try figuring where this insect fits into the Sonoran Desert ecosystem. Thank you for helping. This fly was certainly exhibiting behavior I associate with tephritids, wing-waving and such.

YEp, flies are the coolest of insects... and this one is fun to watch because they always display with their wings... There are tons of great flies in the Sonoran ecosystem, so keep on posting pictures...

I'd start in Tephritoidea.
There are vaguely similar critters in a couple of the families there. I won't attempt to narrow it down (and could be completely off base, for that matter). I suggest moving the post to Diptera for expert attention.
