Wolf Spider - Tigrosa helluo - female

Wolf Spider - Tigrosa helluo - Female
Ballston Lake, Saratoga County, New York, USA
May 20, 2010
Size: 23 mm
This is the biggest spider I've ever seen in New York. It was under a large sheet of black plastic that was spread over our garden. Something like 6 cm across, body maybe 2 cm, but just a guess. ID help appreciated.

Karl -
a picture of the underside helps a lot with the Hogna genus. Did you or can you get one?

Yes!
It was still under the plastic sheet this morning, so I caught it and took a picture of its belly.
I also made measurements: about 5 cm toe to toe, body length 23 mm. Do they make good "pets?" If so, what should I feed it? How long do they live? Do you think this one overwintered? Thanks for your help, Lynette.

Good going,
With all the pieces put together, I believe it is H. helluo. Yours is a little large at 23 mm (these are listed as 18-21 mm), but I don't see that as a major problem. Feel free to move it to the genus page.

Lycosid.
I won't even attempt to go further than that. I'm sure the spider experts will be able to narrow it down.

Thanks, Ken.
I'm thinking maybe Hogna helluo, but that's just between you and me :^)

Hmmm, judging by Kaston's drawing and the size, could be.
