Melanactes piceus

Melanactes piceus
Fews Ford, Eno River State Park, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
May 21, 2010
Size: 28 mm (est.)
There were a number of these on vegetation and flying around in moist floodplain forest at Eno River State Park on this fine spring day. I believe they were freshly emerged from pupa. (I also observed one in similar habitat in Durham County on 5/22/10.)
This is a first record here for NC, and I note that the habitat is in a mesic to moist woodland situation. The Dillons (1), no doubt basing their statements on Blatchley (2), mention that this beetle is found in dry habitats. Perhaps this is true at some point in the life cycle or in some areas, but I would not call the areas where I found them this spring dry by any means.
