Don Chandler examined the specimen and determined this as Gyrinus pugionis.

I've seen times when the species was determined from a specimen only to be changed later after more research.

This is most likely G. lecontei Fall based on the key by Oygur & Wolfe. You were lucky that this dude stuck out his aedeagus out for you (see ventral)- with a few exceptions most species in this genus can't be IDed positively from pictures without examining the male genitalia.
