I have no idea how people can tell the differences between them, unless you know what plant it eats.

which plant was yours eating?

 
That's the catch.
I was visiting back home so I can't go look, but working from memory and looking in my tree field guide I would guess it was probably eating European buckthorn. I will also add that I found this insect in a wind break so there were a lot of other trees and bushes around.
