Red Tick or something else? - Eylais

Red Tick or something else? - Eylais
Simcoe, Ontario, Canada
May 24, 2010
I found this little guy swimming around in a small temporary woodland pond in our local swamp. I believe it to be a tick but am uncertain as in any pictures I have found online of red ticks they all have black heads. Perhaps it's a mite of some sort? There where others like it that where a light brownish colour. If anyone can identify it I would greatly appreciate it as I would like to know if it could be harmful to myself or my dog. Also there where thousands of what looked like puny versions of this guy swimming around in the same pond although they where brown in colour.

not Hydrachnidae
Although big and red, this water mite is an Eylais sp. (Eylaoidea, Eylaidae) rather than a Hydrachna sp. The two very close-set pairs of eyes characteristic of the genus Eylais are vaguely visible. In Hydrachna, the two pairs of eyes are set far apart.

Cheers,
Heather

Looks like
a mite (related to ticks and spiders)
