Syrphid fly on buttercup - Toxomerus marginatus - female

Syrphid fly on buttercup - Toxomerus marginatus - Female
wetland on our land - along Hwy 88 near Praag, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, USA

Toxomerus marginatus? That's my guess based on photos in the guide, and the key on this page.

Your ID's good, Marcie
For bonus points, is your find male or female?

Female?
I think I figured it out - is it the shape of the white on the face that's the clue?

Very good, but we describe it a bit differently.
Eyes touching top center indicate a male on most syrphids (and many other flies), while spaced eyes designate a female. A review of mating pairs underscores the differences.

Thank you!
I enjoy working out these IDs, and I always learn a lot. Thanks for your explanation - I'll look more closely at flies now.

Should I move this to the guide?

Yes, please do.
Also, edit to indicate female. Thanks!
