Can you rule out C. (C.) entis?

Maybe
I forget my original reasoning.

Chironomus entis is not known from New York. Kiknadze et al. wrote about specimens in the Midwest and Saether wrote about specimens from nearby Canada.

"Earlier, C. plumosus was described by taxonomists as a common member of the benthic community in Nearctic lakes (Townes 1945; Sublette and Sublette 1965; Sæther 1975, 1979), although results from ecological studies hinted that two species might be represented in some midwestern lakes (Hilsenhoff 1966; Hilsenhoff and Narf 1968)."

Kiknadze, Iya I. et al. 2000. Intercontinental karyotypic differentiation of Chironomus entis Shobanov, a Holarctic member of the C. plumosus group (Diptera, Chironomidae). Genome 43(5):857-873. https://doi.org/10.1139/g00-052

C. plumosus was in a list of insects in Cayuga lake. I do not remember if C. entis was distinguished at the time.

Given that adult males are apparently identical in the Nearctic, and one needs to look at chromosomal banding for species ID, would it not be likely that entis also occurs in NY, but no specimens have been checked? Cayuga Lake is pretty close to the Bay of Quinte in ON...

I'll send this to Jon Martin to see what he thinks.
