First time I've encountered a stiletto fly.

 
I try to get at least a genus
I try to get at least a genus ID later... They do not visit flowers but they need to drink water and so a wet patch in the desert is the best place to find them. From your picture I can see that the fl was sitting on wet sand, that is the best location to photograph them...
