Carabus sylvosus perhaps?

Moved
Moved from Carabus.

Right genus.
I'm not well-versed in this genus, though. Does C. nemoralis occur in New York. It is a common urban species in Oregon....

You're probably right.
I'd think C. nemoralis is in all northern states since CBIF has it across all of southern Canada although the Peterson "Beetles" field guide says that they were introduced from Europe to the Midwest and West Coast.

I went for C. sylvosus because I found it under a log in the woods and not in a cultivated habitat. Also, it was all black except for a a little bluish green on the edges of the pronotum as opposed to a violet tint throughout. Since the woods were in a park and it was winter, habitat was probably not an issue. I have no idea about the color being important.

Given that it was in a park, I'd guess that C. nemoralis is more likely.
