D. maculata nest - Dolichovespula maculata - female

D. maculata nest - Dolichovespula maculata - Female
Perry County, Pennsylvania, USA
May 29, 2010
This is one of the few queens in my area that actually has the broad white shoulders. And she appears to have feint white stripes on her thorax (also visible in this photo) which I have also never seen before

Ironically, this queen has started her nest in the same 7 ft tall pear tree that attracted all of these last year:

These faint white stripes on mesoscutum...
are especially interesting, for they are homologous to the - rusty red - ones many Dolichovespula media queens have here in Europe (their "shoulders" and their mesoscutellum are then of the same rusty red, giving a quite Hornet-like pattern). The first specimen of D. maculata in BG to my knowledge, as you rightly point out.

Thanks for your comment
I've always wanted to find one like this:

But the individual that I found is magnificent in herself and I am glad to be able to observe her
