Hungry 2cm caterpillar

Hungry 2cm caterpillar
Cumberland County, New Jersey, USA
May 29, 2010
Size: 2 cm
this 2 cm larvae loves my pansies and violets. it's also nibbled some roses as well. it defensively rolls up into a ball and drops into the ground to camouflage itself. This little guy is voracious and I'm wondering what it is and if it is a pest or a beneficial, protected or endangered species. thanks.

family Tenthredinidae
possibly Ametastegia pallipes based on the plant but it looks a little strange. I see only one row of white warts, but there should be two rows on each segment.

Moved from ID Request.

Sawfly larvae
Figuring out exactly what they are would almost certainly require raising them to adulthood--see here for more information, and here to get some sense of what the adults will look like.

Welcome to BugGuide!

i think i can kill them without remorse then!
