Size: 1.5 inches ish
Looks like Palpada but it is WAY bigger than the only one I've seen before.

Yellowjacket Hover Fly looks like a possibility.
The markings match fairly well...



However, 1.5 inches would be considerably outside the size range given by the Guide (18-21mm).

Let's see what others have to say.

 
Milesia virginiensis
Yes, this is Milesia virginiensis, the "Yellowjacket Hover Fly"--the size estimate is simply off--it gives an impression of large size due to its bold behavior. (It is difficult to estimate sizes accurately without lots of practice.)

I agree 1.5" was too much
BUT I do have to say that one inch is not an over estimate. This guy was big. Just sayin'.
