Eleodes sp? -
Cibdelis
Las Trampas SP, California, USA
January 2, 2006
Found under a log, I think it's Eleodes, but maybe its another genera in Tenebrionidae. I don't think its a Zopherid, but I'm not positive.
Thanks a lot!

Underside views
are often vital in making conclusive IDs. I shoot quite a few underside views for that reason. I *should* shoot them for every beetle.

hmmm
Well, I didn't shoot a ventral shot, I can't say for certain, but I DID find them on the underside of a log, and these look really similar to your shots, I'll let you make the call as to whether it should be moved.

Cibdelis sp.?
While it could be an Eleodes, Cibdelis is more common under bark/logs, and have the slightly pebbled elytra you can see in the photo.

Cibdelis sp.
Actually there are some definite Cibdelis on bugguide, which I just confirmed. The underside of the tarsi have dense yellow pubescence, which are lacking in Eleodes.

Tenebrionidae.
Boy, really hard to tell beyond that. Eleodes shows lots of different body shapes and sizes, and other genera mimic them!
