Scaratinae Carabid? - Promecognathus

Scaratinae Carabid? - Promecognathus
Las Trampas SP, California, USA
January 2, 2006
I think this might be a Scarites genus Carabid, I'm pretty sure it is at least in the Scaratinae subfamily. Any idea what it might be?
Thanks a lot

Promecognathus!
Ooh, you got a nice one here:-) This is Promecognathus, possibly P. laevissimus. These predators are specialists on millipedes. You should show this to Jim Labonte at the Oregon Department of Agriculture. He might be able to confirm the species, and tell you more about them. Very neat critter!

from Kip Will: "correct genus. Promecognathus has two species,..
"...P. laevissimus and P. crassus. Need to see setae to tell them apart. Can't see them in the image."
