The All-Too-Familiar Whatsit - Polyxenus

The All-Too-Familiar Whatsit - Polyxenus
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA
May 25, 2010
This creature is a first for me. I found it on the morning of the 25th in my favorite oak gall where I had discovered first a not-fully-developed bark louse on Feb. 28, then, from April 10 to May 1, a Phytocoris plant bug developing from nymph to adulthood. Later in the day, I returned and found a second, different animal, obviously related but different in appearance. The next day I found a soft-nosed weevil ensconced with one of these creatures. They have subsequently all disappeared by the next morning. In some photos they are coming out from holes in the gall, so, obviously they were laid there and were coming out to finish their life cycle, whatever it may be. Why the weevil decided to take up abode there I could not ascertain. Maybe the gall is rent-controlled.:-)

A type of Milipede.
A Polyxenid.
Not the first time someone has photographed one of these guys with a weevil either, hmmm wonder if they like to hang around weevils for some reason :)

Looks similar to this...

This is interesting
because the only millipedes I have seen are those tiny black ones living in the leaf litter. This far south one would assume the larger ones would make an occasional appearance. Thanks, folks!
