Bee or fly ID? - Phidippus audax

Bee or fly ID? - Phidippus audax
Licking County, Ohio, USA
August 27, 2005
Size: 10mm
This should probably end up in the Phidippus audax section of the guide, but first I'm wondering if anyone can ID the prey? I originally thought it was a flower fly, but I think I can see an extra set of wings present.

Drone fly.
Here you can tell how the drone fly, Eristalis tenax, gets its name. It is a dead ringer for a male honey bee:-) The antennae gave it away. The bristle emanating from the terminal antennal segment is called an "arista." Many flies have antennae like this, whereas bees have much longer, evenly-segmented antennae. Great image!

Wow, that was fast!
Thanks for the ID Eric!

Great image
is right. Amazing it overpowered the fly long enough for the venom to take effect.
