I found a silk wrapped leaf "cocoon" on arundinaria gigantea (aka giant cane, a native bamboo) and unwrapped it to find a lot of frass and this little fella

Narrowing the field
I don't have any reference books in which to look this critter up, but I checked the online HOSTS database for nearctic species known to feed on Arundinaria. There were 6 species:
Hesperiidae
Nymphalidae
 
To my not-so-expert eye, your specimen seems more like skipper (Hesperiidae) caterpillars I've seen on bugguide than Nymphalidae ones.
 
It's not too hard to find images of adults for all these species online, but I've only found one picture of a caterpillar (Creole Pearly Eye (Enodia creola). That looks nothing like our little friend- which strengthens my hunch that you have a skipper.

Crocidophora pustuliferalis
Thanks for the help-

this caterpillar turned out to be a pyralid moth "Crocidophora pustuliferalis" - feeds on giant cane
