Moved to Genus
Sorry Dan. I messed up. We need an underside shot to determine if she's Northern, or actually Southern. Moving to genus for now.

i'd say so, on both counts
..

Thanks
I was pretty sure they were, just want to make sure there wasn't anything else that looked the same. I had no idea they were Widow's when I found them, but now I'm glad I did!

EDIT - could also be Southern Black Widow
I just checked the range maps for Northern and Southern Black Widow. You actually have both in New Jersey. The only way to be sure on the species is to have a shot of the female's hourglass. If connected hourglass, Southern, if broken hourglass, Northern. You might want to move these to genus vs. species. See if you can find her again, and get a shot of the belly.
Northern - broken hourglass

Southern - solid hourglass

Northern
Found her again today in the same spot, although she wasn't too happy that I was using a stick to try to flip her over! Definitely a Northern Black Widow (see new image).

broken hourglass - northern bw for sure :-)
