ant nest visitor - Formica exsectoides - female

ant nest visitor - Formica exsectoides - Female
rural, Dallas County, Iowa, USA
June 2, 2010
Bear with me--this is a story of violence. I have been watching a nest of Formica exsectoides for some time now and saw these ants in what seems to be a defensive posture.

Nice story, Harlan.
I am particularly taken by the first image, of the two workers at attention -- probably reacting to and alarm pheromone or the like, squished out of the wounded nest mate.

Nasty little thing!
Any idea of size of ants? Visitor? Are you seeking IDs for both?

The ants are Formica exsecto
The ants are Formica exsectoides and are 5-6 mm in length. The other critter (a springtail?) would be around 1-2 mm. I am looking for the id of the other critter.
