Midget Moth - Eutricopis

Midget Moth - Eutricopis
Edgewood Preserve, Santa Clara County, California, USA
May 31, 2010
Size: ~10
Five different moths nectaring mid-day on Yellow Mariposa Lily in open grassland. All have similar forewing patterns, with bands of light brown, tan and dark brown; in some individuals the browns are replaced by varying degrees of red. Hindwings are generally black with two pair of white spots; however, some individuals' hindwings (not in this group) were a salt & pepper brown to match the forewings (in those cases the hindwings were worn and ragged, suggesting that they lighten with age). Assume the differences are due to age and gender dimorphism in one species.

This one is dark, with no red. Others:

Heliothodes diminutiva
Looks like Heliothodes diminutive (11058).
