Gall Progress - Asphondylia solidaginis

Gall Progress - Asphondylia solidaginis
Mobile (Dog River), Mobile County, Alabama, USA
June 2, 2010
I've got some exuvia pods on some of the galls but not sure what emerged. I did notice a gnat-size critter fly out, when I opened the nursery. I don't know whether related to the galls or not. Whatever has emerged, it appears to be eating on the leaves.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, fell free jump in at any time.

Gall midges (Cecidomyiidae)
Apparently Asphondylia solidaginis, if the galls are formed between two stuck-together leaves, as it appears in this image. In your first shot it looks like there is just one leaf, and I didn't know what to make of it because there are no described galls that look like that.

Stuck Together
All the leaves with galls, are two overlapping and stuck together. The first photo shows two leaves crossed. I've seen gnat-sized insects leave when I open the doors. They must be from the galls, as I was careful to completely cleaned out the terrarium before putting the galls in there.
