Are these in Southern California?
I collected something identical to this (and it is NOT Zarhippus) in Julian, California (San Diego County) a couple weeks ago. Actually, the only difference is that the tibiae and tarsi on mine are black. I knew it was something special when I determined it was not Zarhippus. Are there fireflies in S. California afer all??

Wow!
Oh, how cool! This is actually a type of firefly, a male of Pterotus obscuripennis. Females are larviform, meaning they reach sexual maturity while retaining a larval appearance. I've only collected one specimen myself. Neat animals! Thanks for sharing this really nice image.
