Above North Basin, Mt. Katahdin, Piscataquis County, Maine, USA

There were several of these resting on their webs among the boulders above treeline.

Moved from Spiders. Nice find. The Orb-weaving Spiders of Canada and Alaska - The Insects and Arachnids of Canada Part 23 (1) only lists carbonarioides in Maine. Carbonarioides also has a more broken pattern than packardi.

General range
is given as Alaska to Quebec, south to Utah and Colorado. Packardi is Yukon Territory to Labrador, south to Mexico and to Northern Pennsylvania. Both are more commonly found in the western states. In the East, my maps show one data point in PA for packardi and one data point for Maine for carbonarioides.

Ranges are interesting
carbonarioides = AK, YT, NT, BC, AB, PQ, NH, WY, UT, CO

and

packardi = YT, NT, BC, AB, MB, OR, WA, CA, MT, ID, WY, CO, UT, NV, AZ, NM, PA, NF

The Northeast looks to be an afterthought for both species!

Curious. Nice find!
Reminds us of the Aculepeira carbonarioides in the guide. We'll have to see what the range of that species is. Lynette has been studying these, so she may already know. See

A. carbonarioides?
I don't see that many nearctic species listed -- really only A. carbonarioides and A. aculifera (and RC has an undescribed prairie species.

Oops, I overlooked A. packardi, which might be the better choice for the NE.
