Which Dagger Moth? - Acronicta tristis

Which Dagger Moth? - Acronicta tristis
along Hwy 88 near Praag, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, USA
August 4, 2009
I collected this caterpillar from an oak tree. (I like the pattern of the leaf damage.) It continued to eat oak leaves, pupated in a small piece of dead wood, spent the winter in a container in the refrigerator, and finally the moth emerged the following June. A. increta? The later instars look similar to the caterpillar in Wagner's book - might it be in that species complex?
