In Oak Woodland, near Pacific Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia).
There are reportedly only two Duskywings in southern California with a white trailing edge on the hindwing:
Erynnis tristis, and E. funeralis.
After careful study of descriptions and images, taking into account variations, I tend to think that this is E. tristis.
However, in some photos Mournfuls look like Funerals and vice versa. The mournful situation is that I'm still not certain. Oaks speak for tristis, also it isn't dark enough, nor the contrasting patch on the forewing light enough, to be funeralis.
