Mr. Cicada - Neotibicen davisi

Mr. Cicada - Neotibicen davisi
McDonough (south of Atlanta), Henry County, Georgia, USA
August 24, 2005
Size: about an inch
My son found this Cicada in the driveway (Aug 2005 - McDonough, GA). I put it up on a plastic chair to photograph. I have looked through the photos of Cicada here on site. I need to know the exact species name to enter the photo in a contest. I may be incorrect but I think the genus might be Tibicen. please help. Thank you

Moved
Moved from Tibicen pronotalis.

Tibicen davisi
About an inch?..even if it's just the body (??)
This estimate is too small for T. walkeri (the 3rd largest eastern US Tibicen species!)

Try Tibicen davisi. It is the only Tibicen in the Southeast that satisfies the color, pattern and measurment(s).

Note: Tibicen walkeri, also has strikingly pale eyes.

Moved from Walker's Cicada.

Gerry Bunker reports that ,
as Eric mentions below, T. chloromera is a very dark species - the pronotal collar is usually black though an olive green irregular spot near each humeral angle has been identified in some specimens.
Continuing, he says: There is enough of a view to see that the pronotal collar and pronotum are a bright almost neon green color which is more indicative of Tibicen walkeri. Unfortunately, there is not enough of a view on this specimen in order to say 100% for sure that it is T. walkeri. We'll move this to walkeri while awaiting any other thoughts.

what a colorful cicada
Every summer the cicadas come out down here in south FL, but they have bland colors. I would love to see a cicada that beautiful.

Don
I thought this one was more colorful then the typical ones too. Glad you enjoyed the photo.

Colorful, thanks to photoshop?
Was it really that colorful straight out of the camera, or were the colors, especially the reds, enhanced in Photoshop?

colors were NOT enhanced. Th
colors were NOT enhanced. This shot is SOOTC (strait out of the camera)

Tibicen chloromerus
Actually, this is one of the few cicadas that you CAN identify from this angle - the bright green patches on the thorax and wing vein bases is distinctive.

Question.
Most of the specimens I have seen of this species (and many of the images in our guide pages) are decidedly black, not green. Is there simply that much variation; is it a product of aging; other explanation? Thank you.

no color changes or enhancements
I only cropped my photo, no color enhancement or altering. The large purple area in the front is actually a shadow, but I thought it added to the photo.

Andy
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I appreciate your help so much. I was hopeing that s/he could be identified. Now I can give them the full scientific name.

Tibicen sp.
It appears to be a species in the genus Tibicen, but it is impossible to tell without additional images showing different aspects of the insect's anatomy. Even then, there is no guarantee. Most insects simply cannot be identified from images alone. Requesting that submissions for photo contests include the exact species is ridiculous, and the problems with insect identification should be explained to judges, and those writing the rules. Many insects must be dissected to determine species! Good luck to you, please post more here at Bugguide:-)

Photo of Mr. Cicada sold at the Photo show this month
My photo did not win or place at the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta , but it did sell. Thank you and everyone here at bugguide for all you help identifing the species.

Thank you
Eric, Thank you for the quick response. Sounds like the judges will just need to be happy with Tibicen.
