Cicada Species? - Cacama moorei

Cicada Species? - Cacama moorei
Tucson (Desert Museum), Pima County, Arizona, USA
May 30, 2010
Photographed on the grounds of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum outside Tucson. It flew off with a whiring buzz before I could get a good estimate of its size. About an inch to inch and a half. Is this Cacama valvata?

I wouldn't rule out the recently described "C. moorei".
RECENTLY, a "new species" was described in this region (see INFO)

Locality + despite the teneral pruinosity (silvery wash) there is some slight orangish edging to the pronotum and slight indications in the "face".

REFER to the following:
Cacama moorei sp. n. Sanborn & M. Heath
sw. USA (ARIZONA) & MEXICO

Moved from Cicadas.

Cacama valvata
Possibly a dark specimen that shows the white edges of the thorax only faintly.

Incidentally: if you want to refer to another photo for comparison, please either attache the image or cite the BugGuide photo number. It's no fun trying to scan all the cicada images taken in Tucson!

Thanks
Thanks for the positive ID. Sorry about the comparison mix-up. I'm still a little new at the computer nuts and bolts of the website. Thanks for the info!

Not sure.
I sure am envious, though. Never seen anything like this in nearly ten years here....

Cicada
Eric, I'll keep it in "Cicadas" for now. It sure looks a lot like the one that Gerardine Vargas submitted from Tucson on June 5, 2009.
