It is a Checkerspot that looks so much like a Crescent that it was once classified (incorrectly) with them. It is
Chlosyne gorgone
, which is fairly common east from the mountains in Colorado. The larvae use mostly Sunflowers as host plants (occasionally
Iva
and other Composites as well).
