Dragonfly TX mini-gathering - Orthemis ferruginea

Dragonfly TX mini-gathering - Orthemis ferruginea
Bentsen-Rio Grande St P, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
June 5, 2010
Dragonfly near the Headquarters building.

Moved
Moved from Dragonflies.

Only other similiar
species would be Scarlet (with the lighter pterostigmas)...but that TX is "rrrrrrrrrrreach" from the typical range.

Female Roseate Skimmer?
This is probably a female Roseate Skimmer, but I'll be interested in other opinions:-)

Your ID is probably correct - Orthemis ferruginea
Compare Greg Lasley - Roseate Skimmer
with Greg Lasley - Carmine Skimmer

Per Paulson (1) - Carmine Skimmer females have the sides of the thorax plain or lightly marked with parallel stripes while the Roseate Skimmer thorax side is conspicuously striped with somewhat irregular stripes.

From what I can see of the thorax this appears to be a Roseate Skimmer.
