Devil bug

Devil bug
Fairhope, Baldwin County, Alabama, USA
June 11, 2010
Size: Approx 1" long
Found in burrows made in compact, sandy or clay based soils. I'm assuming its a larvae of some sort, but I'm not totally sure.

Tiger beetle larva
Here's one in the guide to compare it to.

hunchback larva
I wondered what that part sticking up was. Thought maybe a deformity. I'd never have guessed tiger beetle larva. That's a new one to me.

Once you learn to recognize their burrows,
you can "fish" for them with blades of grass. They grab onto the grass with their mandibles, and you can pull them out into the open. Fun stuff.

Thats how I caught him ;)
