Some species formerly treated here, including the nearctic puberula, are now placed in Sculptotheca; anatomy of male genitalia suggests that Protheca and Sculptotheca are not too closely related

a single species in our area, ~30 spp. total
Size
1.5 - ~4 mm
Range
New World, primarily neotropical (one ?adventive sp. has been found in Cabo Verde Is., W. Africa)
Food
larvae probably live in dead wood
