Male orb weaver - Araneus bispinosus - male

Male orb weaver - Araneus bispinosus - Male
Stulsaft Park, Redwood City, San Mateo County, California, USA
June 5, 2010
Size: 4 mm
I beat this adult male orb weaver from a Toyon shrub. Looks like an Araneus sp. to me, but I'd love to have the opinion of our orb weaver experts! :) I'm having trouble finding a palp match right now, but should be able to get this to species eventually.

Moved
Moved from Orb Weavers. Good call! I just checked under the scope and it's a virtually perfect match to fig. 96 in the 1973 Levi revision. I placed a link to this paper on our genus and species info. pages.

Congrats to you both -- good

Yes, certainly looks to be Araneus
At that size one of the small ones. And near the coast, we wonder if this isn't our first bispinosus? Let's see what Lynette says. Levi says "Numerous collections indicate that the animals were collected by sweeping chaparral, coastal sage, or coastal sage-oak woodland."

Good call
A great addition to the guide.
