Palisades
now I remember, mine were under rocks at the Palisades visitor center on Mt Lemmon!

 
These were high up
meadow trail on top of the mountain - burned area in picture with carab.

ouch! looks a lot like Velleius dilatatus to me...
dunno if this monster is available in the New World, though :)

 
Yah I can see the similaritie
Yah I can see the similarities..but this is the subgenus Megaquedius..I'll take a look at the revision tomorrow to see if I can narrow down a species. Western only group.
