An Alien-looking Coocoon... - Mantis religiosa

An Alien-looking Coocoon... - Mantis religiosa
Petaluma, Sonoma County, California, USA
December 22, 2005
Size: 1.25"L, 3/4" W, 5/8" Tall
I found this as we were cleaning a woodpile at a construction site. The 2X4 had been there no longer than a month. The weather was what it was in December...and I'm wondering what will erupt out of the shell, sitting on a table in my dining room.

ah! the english system of units
This is actually more than 3 cm long.

Looks like it might be
an egg case from a mantid, see among others in the guide, Some of the experts here might even be able to tell you which one! We'll be curious to see what they say.

Mantid ootheca.
This is indeed a mantid ootheca, though I'm unsure which species. Moving to guide page for the family.

And be careful
You don't want a lot of baby mantis crawling all over your house :-)
