Adult female camouflaged on birch bark, near black light. Laid eggs. Eggs overwintered in fruit cellar. Eggs removed from overwintering on May 3, 2005. Ten eggs hatched on May 6, 2005. Fed Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera). Only two larvae survived. Larvae pupated June 15, 2005 by wrapping themselves in a silken nest inside the leaf of host plant.

This is one of my favorite insects, even though I've never seen one alive:-) Very nice image, Janice.

Janice J. Stiefel Good to hear from you, Eric! If you'd like to see live White Underwings, you'll have to visit Door County, WI in August or September. I have photographed three different versions; they are quite variable. Every time I find one, I experience a sense of awe and wonder at their simple beauty.
