White Underwing Larva - Catocala relicta
Town of Baileys Harbor, Hidden Corners Sanctuary, Door County, Wisconsin, USA
June 11, 2005
Adult female came to black light September 5, 2004, laid eggs, overwintered eggs in fruit cellar. Removed eggs from fruit cellar May 3, 2005. Ten eggs hatched May 6, 2005. Fed Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera). Only two larvae survived. Two larvae pupated June 15, 2005 by wrapping themselves in a silken nest inside the leaf of host plant. Two adults eclosed July 12, 2005.

Thank you for posting these great shots--and for the info too. I've only ever seen the adult moth before! :-)
When I was a kid, I used to scour every birch tree trunk in the neighbourhood for one of these--with no luck. I'm in London, Ontario where there aren't that many birch or aspen trees.
Easily my favourite Underwing.
