Ladybug .. - Hippodamia variegata

Ladybug .. - Hippodamia variegata
East River Walk/Park, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA
June 13, 2010
Size: ~8 mm
This lovely specimen was found at my usual Ladybug haunt at the East River Park in Manhattan. There's a certain kind of tall growing bushy weed that grows abundantly in a section of garden there that they really seem to like. I really should find out what it is so as to be able to be more specific. If I were a rose gardener I'd plant some to attract the ladybugs to eat the aphids!

Hippodamia - convergens or variegata
Lovely indeed! It is either the native Convergent Lady Beetle, Hippodamia convergens, or the introduced Variegated Lady Beetle, H. variegata. The pattern of the white markings on the pronotum (between head and wings) makes me think Variegated, but I wouldn't rule out Convergent yet.

If you take a photo of the plant and post it on BG, one of our botany specialists may be able to ID it for you. (We don't keep plant photos on the Guide, but it's okay to post a pic, get the ID, and then Frass it.)

Lady beetles eat pollen as well as insects, so if the plants have pollen-loaded flowers, that could be attracting the LBs, in addition to any aphids it may have.

Thanks! :)
I just may have to post o photo of that plant. It would be great to get an ID for it!
