Id and behavior help? - Epiaeschna heros
Kensington, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
June 16, 2010
Size: 3-4 inches BIG
Hi Need help with this Skimmer (?). I have no idea and am getting nowhere in the image base. Also look at what the tail is doing.

It was 'stabbing" the wood of the log with a small spike on ventral side of the tail. Would poke at the wood several time then move the tail, moved backwards to gain new territory/ find fresh wood.

J & J, Thanks for your help with the Darner.

Please see...
...this ovipositing Swamp Darner (Epiaeschna heros).

Not sure about the ID.

-=EDIT=-

After seeing your other image, I am now more certain of the ID. I also liked the two images because they are of the same dragonfly.

You are correct
on both species and behavior. Swamp Darners lay their eggs in wood over or floating in water.

Darner
Thanks for your help.
