caterpillar - Anacampsis consonella

caterpillar - Anacampsis consonella
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
June 3, 2010
Many leaves in this shrub -- Viburnum lentago (originally IDed as Viburnum cassinoides) were folded and sealed by a small caterpillars. Do the cocoons drop to the ground when formed? I've checked a number of these folded leaves after the caterpillar has been inside and grown and have never found a cocoon although the leaves were still folded. However one end of each of the folded leaves has been eaten away. I noticed that the cocoons were formed outside of the leaves in the samples I collected.

Moved from ID Request. Very nice series! Moving here for now based on Bob Patterson's comments on the last image - please feel free to move elsewhere as you see fit - I don't know moths at all...
