Bombylius varius - female

Bombylius varius - Female
Cole Mill Access, Eno River State Park, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 18, 2010
Size: 13 mm (est.)
Several of these were buzzing very loudly over the trail and occasionally pausing to oviposit. (This one paused for quite some time to oviposit, so I'm presuming it is a female. They were much larger than Bombylus major (about 1/2 again as long) and had a very loud, bee-like buzzing.
Or, this may not have been oviposition, but collection of sand to coat eggs--not sure if this genus does that.
Also posted at https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/51824043 if anyone would care to verify it there.
