ID for a tiny orange spider?

ID for a tiny orange spider?
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
April 24, 2010
Size: approx. 2 mm
This tiny orange spider was busy making a web on Phacelia distans at the Claremont Colleges' Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station. Any degree of identification would be greatly appreciated! I do have more photos if another angle would be helpful.

We would suggest a very young
Neoscona crucifera

My first thought was
Araneus spiderling. A ventral view might help, though at this young age it might not. I have almost convinced myself I see shoulders on this young spider. If Nancy can keep an eye on it as it matures and document the progress that would be great.

Thanks!
Thanks, John, Jane, and Lynette! I thought I saw a hint of shoulders, too, but it's not entirely clear. The pattern on abdomen also reminded me of this large Araneus, which was only a few hundred feet from where I photographed this little spider. I tried to get a ventral view, but was not successful. I'll see if I can find the spider again and keep an eye on it.

Very interesting
Knowing adults in the area certainly helps. It does seem to have that pattern. I hope it stays put, I'd like to see it grow up.

Also
they are pretty easy to raise.
