Moths!

I finally got a copy of Peterson's guide to moths! And I am very excited (I stayed up to 1 am last night identifying moth photos). I cannot believe this great resource is out of print.

While hunting for this book, I met a retired entomology professor from UMass. He mentioned that another publishing house had acquired the rights to this book and that we may see it in print again. Fingers crossed...

A new edition perhaps
I had heard a few years ago that Covell was planning on doing an updated edition, but I don't know if he ever even got started with that. It certainly would be nice to see an updated edition with more coverage and with all the plates in full color.

Its Coming....
I talked to Dr. Covell last October, and he confirmed that the moth guide will be reprinted, but not by Houghton-Mifflin as I recall. Again, a situation where U.S. publishers are loathe to publish something they fear "won't sell." I think that can be changed, though. The fellow who does the moth scans has almost single-handedly raised moths to works of art...literally! Wish we could do that for beetles, wasps,....

Update on new edition
Dr. Covell is now based at the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera Research at UF in Gainesville, where I also work. I asked him this week about the Peterson guide, and he said it is in the works and should be out in time for Christmas. The front cover will feature the Luna moth.

saddleback moth
Do you have a picture of the saddleback moth, not the catepillar? I have the caterpillar, I'd like to know what the moth looks like.
Thanks, Barb Kaden

I have some photos
But I haven't posted them yet. I'll move those to the front of my "to post" list.

Photos added
Check out the updated guide page, with moth photos!

Not here yet, but
a quick google by scientific name (always a good bet) turned up these images of Sibine stimulea.
