Red Clicks - Melanotus communis-complex

Red Clicks - Melanotus communis-complex
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
January 21, 2006
Size: Not big, as Elaters go
I found a big crop of these red Elaters under bark today, January 22nd. They have beads of water on them because the frosty night temperatures had given way to highs in the low 50s. They have a lot of yellowish pubescence on them.

I don't recall seeing any Elaters this red and with this much pubescence, in this area. Maybe the summertime color will darken to reddish-brown?

Similarly, using Dillon & Dillon I couldn't find any unmarked red species with dense yellow pubescence. Any thoughts?

my thought is:
perhaps Melanotus sp.. Habitat and appearance would fit, and if size was well above 1 cm, you may trust this comment of mine even more.

Well over
Thanks, Boris! Yes, well over 1 cm, no doubt about that.
