Pipevine Swallowtail Chrysalis - Battus philenor

Pipevine Swallowtail Chrysalis - Battus philenor
Davis, Yolo County, California, USA
June 20, 2010
Size: 1.5"
100% crop of the area where the silk is wrapped around the cocoon. It looks like what happens when someone ties a rope around a tree. Also note the red marks; does anyone know if these are part of the design, a parasite, or something else? Thanks!

Thank you so much! I work very hard to create great images, and it always means so much to me to hear that my photography is appreciated. For these photos, I used natural light (which was already well diffused from all the surrounding trees) and a sturdy tripod with a good ball head (the chrysalis was at quite an awkward height and angle). I used a cable release and the mirror-up feature on my camera to reduce vibration, and averaged four exposures to reduce noise. I just wish I could have found a chrysalis on something more natural (like a tree) instead of this ugly concrete. =)
