Teneral male?

Apparently just visiting (these are strong fliers and wander about a lot), I was in my front yard, looking at something else, and noticed this big, striking dragonfly resting on a California Juniper (Juniperus californica) a few feet away at eye level.

It reminds me of some kind of goofy cartoon character (the claw worshippers in Toy Story?).

Green Darners body color will change with temp changes...and to the best of my knowlege (ohio based) september is too late in the year for one to be teneral.

September in Southern California
Here in LA, early September is often the hottest time of the year, with daytime temperatures usually in the 90s or 100s and nighttime temperatures in the mid 60s or higher(Fahrenheit, of course). Unless purple is the color that goes with heat exhaustion, I'm leaning away from temperature as the explanation.

Oh
I didnt realize that about Cali. and as i said all that I know is based off of Ohios Odonates...

BTW is it that warm/hot all year?

CA Seasons
The real heat is from mid-July through mid-September. In the spring and early summer it's cool and cloudy in the mornings and gets moderately hot some afternoon, in the fall it ranges from moderately cool to moderately hot, and it only gets chilly from about mid-December to late February (by Ohio standards, it never gets really cold). Right now it gets down to the 40s and occasional 30s at night, but can be up in the 60s and 70s by afternoon.

All of our rain happens in the cooler half of the year, with the heaviest amounts in November and especially in March.
