There wasn't much left of this spider, but enough for a determination of species: the widespread Pardosa distincta (southern Canada, north-eastern and central US south to Arizona; RC also finds it in prairie grasses in Washington).

Wow, lots of color variation in this species! Compare yours with these males from Whitecourt (collected within a few yards of each other):



Goes to show how difficult it is to separate Pardosa sp. by general appearance alone. Another case in point: I recently found a P. xerampelina male that appears very different from the mottled one I collected earlier this season. The palps are a match, though.

Yes; the specimen that RC photographed was also very dark. But then again this specimen had seen better days, and I tend to lighten up the shadow areas in my images to bring out detail; the actual appearance would be a bit darker, I think.

I wish I could remember the circumstances of how I found this -- was it in a web perhaps? I can't remember. Perhaps I noted it somewhere; will have to look.
